I had to look back at the title once or twice to see if I was reading the right book, of course that was before the chocolate horse was revealed. I was also surprised by Josiah because I was expecting a male! Josiah was certainly different from the 'detective' one expects to find in a cozy mysteryThe book was a mixture of history, murder, thriller and a special type of humour that added extra spice to the story. It was different from the usual cozy mystery but still very enjoyable. The blend of characters added extra flavour to story and served to entice me to keep the pages turned, not to mention the many displays of food sharing and friendships. I was familiar with the author and the series as I had previously read "Death by Honey Bee - Book I (Josiah Reynolds)" and "Death by Bourbon - Book 4 (Josiah Reynolds)". I find these books entertaining because of the relationship that Josiah has with her daughter (Asa) and good friends (June aka Lady Elsmere, Matthew, Charles, and Franklin). I also find these books entertaining because I have never actually visited Kentucky and find the information about the land and the people interesting. I wish I hadn't gotten carried away. This sixth installment of Abigail Keam's series left me unsatisfied. Keam lacks the skill of writers like Diane Mott Davidson, for example, to weave characters through many books in a way readers can follow. Keam populated this installment with characters I hadn't met or had forgotten from book one. I didn't know who half the people were who ran in and out of Josiah's house or why they were there. They seemed to have nothing to do with this story. If you like these books, start with Death by Honey Bee and read sequentially or you'll be as lost as I was. Josiah is a 50 something woman, divorced, and trying to make a living selling honey from her bees. Knowing her reputation for solving mysteries, Josiah's neighbor asks her for help to find out what happened to her son. As Josiah investigates, a self proclaimed enemy is trying to end Josiah's life. Good thing Josiah's friends have her back. The characters are well developed and Josiah seems like someone I would like to have as a friend. I'm all for love but it has a time and place and not too much of it during a good murder or two or three.
